Lightspeed i-Helicopter is a Remote Control (RC) helicopter which is controlled by an App (Copter Controller) that you download from Google Play and Apple Appstore and install onto your Android or Apple Smartphone or Tablet. Via control from the app, the included phone transmitter sends an infrared signal to the helicopter giving easy and full control – you do not get or need an additional remote controller. From the app you can fly it up, down and left, right, forward, back with the control stick or use the motion control setting and tilt your phone. The trim feature allows micro adjustments if the helicopter drifts. A Turbo option speeds up the helicopter (it’s fast) and the lights – which look superb in the dark – can be turned off to preserve battery life. To charge the iHelicopter and transmitter use the included USB lead, takes about 30-40 minutes for each if nearly empty.
The iHelicopter flies really well once you’ve practiced taking it up and down and within a few minutes of installing the app we shot the video on this review outside (harder than inside because of the breeze), and I’ve never flown one before. If you’re new to RC gadgets you’ll need a bit of patience to get the control actions into your muscle memory and when you do, you’ll be having a lot of FUN!As an excited newbie, I had a tendency to go high and fast too soon and this resulted in a few crashes which could have damaged the product on a harder surface – but you do get spare blades if you damage them. The helicopter must be within 6 Metres of the phone transmitter – which connects into your phone/tablet headphone port (3.5mm) – and when I flew it too high it fell from the air. I practiced on the lawn so the product remains in one piece, but if you do lose control, just reduce the power to zero and let it fall and it should be fine. When installing the app on your phone or tablet and connecting the transmitter, turn your volume up to full and on Apple devices, it’s also important to ensure ‘Mono Audio’ is off. You can find this in Settings, General, Accessibility, Mono Audio.
Tip: If the transmitter and helicopter do not sync, switch off the helicopter and the app, switch the app on first and then the helicopter and wait until the red LED on the helicopter stops flashing. It will sync eventually so give it time. The instructions are really simple and do help you to get flying better and faster and if you follow them you’ll be flying in no time. Good product and a lot of fun!
