7 Most Effective Ways to Reduce Cart Abandonment Rate

reduce abandon cart

Cart abandonment is a challenge for every ecommerce business. Regardless of great products or services, about 70% of your potential customers will leave their shopping carts at the checkout page.

Though it’s not possible to eliminate cart abandonment altogether, there are ways to reduce the rate of it. And here are 7 tips that will help you reduce the cart abandonment rate for your ecommerce site:

1. Offer different shipping options

Your online store should have shipping options of various kinds. Many customers like faster delivery, while others prefer a lower cost. It’s the best if you can offer free shipping. Even if free shipping increases the overall cost for your business, it’s one of the most effective ways to reduce cart abandonment.

2. Let buyers checkout as guests

Many ecommerce sites make it mandatory to open an account before placing the final order. This complicates the checkout process as a large number of customers don’t want to fill up long signup forms before making the purchase.

3. Reduce the steps in the checkout process

The less step a customer has to reach the payment page the better. Try to reduce the number of time a potential buyer needs to click the Next button. By properly combining the steps, it’s not hard to streamline the whole process.

4. Clearly show the total cost, no hidden pricing

From the very beginning, the product prices in your site should be crystal clear to avoid any confusion. Don’t forget to show the final total price in the payment stage, clearly mentioning the amount of tax and shipping charges. Also, provide easy refund and replacement guarantees.

5. Use trust badges

Establishing the sense of trust and security is one of the key ways to make sure your customers have a peace of mind while completing the payment. The most recognised trust badges or security seals are Norton, BBB. TRUSTe etc. Place these badges tactically near the box where the customer is supposed to enter credit card information.

6. Support multiple payment methods

There is no point in losing potential customers by supporting a limited number of payment methods. Find out the payment methods that most of your customers prefer. Give them the maximum number of possible choices.

7. Make the cart editable. Enable save for later option

A customer may want to make last minute edits, like – adding or removing a certain item, or changing the quantity of the products after considering the total price. An editable cart is very helpful in this regard.

Additionally, your checkout page should have a save for later option. So, if a customer is not ready to pay right then, she can come back later.

Reducing the cart abandonment rate can significantly increase the total sales of your ecommerce site. You can find even more ways to reduce the cart abandonment rate by running specific A/B tests. But the points we have mentioned above will help you eliminate some primary obstacles that cause your customers to abandon the cart.
